    : While Tongan consumers were faced with a new 15% Consumption Tax coming into effect today, April 1, Tongan businesses were not amused by the sudden announcement by their Port Authority of a 25% increase in ports tariffs to take effect on April 4. They warn that the increase in shipping tariffs will absorb any savings that were to be made from the Consumption Tax introduction.

    : An assessment of Hardship and Poverty in Tonga, which was carried out jointly by the Government of Tonga and the Asian Development Bank in 2003, stated that 23% of the 16 communities surveyed in Tongatapu, Ha'apai, Vava'u, 'Eua, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo'ou, were living below the poverty line of $28.18 per person per week.

    The ADB has approved a US$25 million loan to help protect and improve the standard of living of rural people in the Fiji Islands whose livelihoods are at risk in the impending restructuring of the sugar industry.

    The project targets about 8,000 sugarcane farmers, as well as cutters, mill workers, landowners and indigenous Fijians, including women, in the sugarcane belt areas and nearby rural and peri-urban areas of the Western and Northern divisions on the main islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

    : Three baby Pilot Whales were rescued from the shallow waters of eastern Vava'u, in Tonga, after being stranded for nearly a week. But the mother whale and two other whales that were stranded with the pod died from injuries believed to be caused by a shark attack.
