Nuku'alofa, Tonga : One big priority for the annual UN Climate Change Conference 2024 (COP29) is to make the climate Loss and Damage Fund operational, said HE Mukhtar Babayev, the COP29 President-Designate, who was in Tonga this week to meet Pacific Islands leaders, attending the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The first Pacific-led and member-owned climate and disaster resilience financing facility, the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) will be headquartered in Tonga. The PRF has got a total pledges of USD$137 million, as announced today, at Fa'onelua Center, by Troika as one of the important outcomes of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Tonga this week.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for the Western Pacific joined prime ministers and presidents from across the Region and United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting in Tonga this week. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Māori King, Tuheitia Paki, crowned Te Arikinui Kiingi Tuheitia, has died peacefully on Friday morning at the age of 69, New Zealand news media reported today. Kiingi Tuheitia succeeded his mother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, following her death in 2006. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Hon. Pat Conroy MP visited the MORDI Tonga Trust facilities today, one of several site visits he has made in Tongatapu, on the side of the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Nuku'alofa. The Australian Government is investing AUD$9.5 million in a new partnership to deliver critical, climate resilient infrastructure and activities to communities across the Kingdom of Tonga. Neiafu, Vava'u : Pacific Island Forum Leaders flew to Vava'u this morning on chartered flights for the Leaders Retreat Meeting of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting 2024, held at the Puataukanave Hotel in Neiafu. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is undergoing major reform, that will cover the processes that countries, including Tonga and the Pacific, use to access funds and investments, GCF’s Head of Vulnerability and Communications, Stephanie Speck said today, in Nuku’alofa. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The first early warning and hazard-ready mobile application for Tonga was launched yesterday, 27 August, by Tonga Meteorology Service, on the side of the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Nuku'alofa. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's domestic fibre-optic submarine communications cable went out again yesterday following a series of strong earthquakes, centred in Ha'apai, that also shook the capital. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today, joined youth members from around the Pacific in a collaborative call for immediate climate actions and demanded equality from the world's biggest emitters of CO2. Over a hundred youth members joined this Inter-generational dialogue with the UN Secretary General, in a talanoa style, seated on mats on the floor of Tonga's Legislative Assembly Chamber, in Nuku’alofa, on 26 August. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The decisions that world leaders face in the coming years will be determining the fate, firstly, of the Pacific Islands, but also of everyone else, the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said today, “If we save the Pacific we save the world.” He urged Pacific states “to make your voices heard and heard loudly.” The meeting of 18 Pacific Island leaders and their representatives was officially opened by HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala at the Tonga High School’s new stadium. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : United Nations Secretary General António Guterres arrived at Fua'amotu International Airport in Tonga at 7:30pm yesterday 24 August 2024, to attend the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku will remain as Acting Minister for both Defence and Foreign Affairs throughout the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga.
