    : The first Pacific-led and member-owned climate and disaster resilience financing facility, the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) will be headquartered in Tonga.     : The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for the Western Pacific joined prime ministers and presidents from across the Region and United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting in Tonga this week. At the high-level meeting, Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala called on leaders of Pacific islands and other countries to make health a high priority on their agenda, in the context of the climate catastrophe that is putting the Pacific in peril.

    : The Māori King, Tuheitia Paki, crowned Te Arikinui Kiingi Tuheitia, has died peacefully on Friday morning at the age of 69, New Zealand news media reported today. Kiingi Tuheitia succeeded his mother, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, following her death in 2006.

    : Pacific Island Forum Leaders flew to Vava'u this morning on chartered flights for the Leaders Retreat Meeting of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting 2024, held at the Puataukanave Hotel in Neiafu. The fourth day of their gathering turned on blue skies in contrast to the torrential downpours that greeted the ministers on their first day in Tongatapu on Monday.

    : The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is undergoing major reform, that will cover the processes that countries, including Tonga and the Pacific, use to access funds and investments, GCF’s Head of Vulnerability and Communications, Stephanie Speck said today, in Nuku’alofa.     : The communities of Kanokupolu and Ha'atafu in Hihifo, Tongatapu, welcomed the United Nations Secretary General Mr. António Guterres ahead of his departure from Tonga today. He visited two of the areas that were most affected by the events of the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai volcanic eruption and tsunami in there.

    : Tonga's domestic fibre-optic submarine communications cable went out again yesterday following a series of strong earthquakes, centred in Ha'apai, that also shook the capital. Tonga Cable Acting CEO Mr Sosafate Kolo confirmed the outage, to Matangi Tonga this afternoon. Cable communications to Vava'u and Ha'apai are cut.

    : The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today, joined youth members from around the Pacific in a collaborative call for immediate climate actions and demanded equality from the world's biggest emitters of CO2. Over a hundred youth members joined this Inter-generational dialogue with the UN Secretary General, in a talanoa style, seated on mats on the floor of Tonga's Legislative Assembly Chamber, in Nuku’alofa, on 26 August.

The Secretary General arrived on a special Royal New Zealand Air Force flight from Auckland, with leaders and delegates from several Pacific countries.
