    : Raids by Tonga Police Drugs Squad over the past week have resulted in the arrest of 17 people on Tongatapu, allegedly involved with importation, intended sale, and distribution of methamphetamine. In several raids on August 9, 13-14, and 17, police seized a total of 6.1 kg kilograms of methamphetamine allegedly imported into Tonga from the United States. A customs officer, a prison officer, a prisoner, two Comanchero gang members and a local businessman, are among the suspects charged, Police reported today.

    : A cluster of container houses assembled at Popua was officially launched on Saturday, 17 August, when HRH Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala unveiled a plaque revealing the name "Niu Lodge". The units will help to accommodate delegates attending the 53rd Pacific Island Forum Leaders' Meeting, which opens in Nuku'alofa on 26 August.

    : The Cable Ship Lodbrog successfully retrieved the southern end of the damaged domestic submarine cable on Wednesday. Tonga Cable Ltd. told Matangi Tonga today that work is underway to reconnect the cable today, to restore fibre optic communications to the northern groups of Vava'u and Ha'apai.

    : A US$1.9 million grant from the Government of Japan will provide Tonga Fire & Emergency Services with firefighting trucks including two pumper trucks, two water tanker trucks, and three pick up trucks. Prime Minister Hon.     : Cable Ship Lodbrog found the northern end of Tonga's damaged fibre optic cable yesterday, 11 August, and is currently attempting to locate the southern end attached to Tongatapu. The repair of the submarine domestic telecommunications cable is hoped to be completed this Friday, 16 August.

    : For years the whale watch industry in Vavau has fought to have better practices and less licenses due to an over-saturation of licenses, badly behaved skippers and, in recent years, clients who believe they can do whatever they want in the water with the whales. Why is there no list of operators, their boats, skippers and guides and passenger numbers? I and others in the industry ask: Why are more licenses being issued and to boats that are not suitable for the purpose of whale watching?  - Kirsty Bowe.

    : South West Pacific Heads of Maritime Forces (SWPHMF) met Wednesday in an exclusive meeting in Nuku’alofa, held at the Leadership Center, Masefield Naval Base. Tonga's CMDR Taniela Tuita said the 14 heads of the maritime forces will share knowledge, skills and action plans. Sitting alongside the Pacific Islands maritime forces leaders, are Australia's Chief of Navy, VADM Mark Hammond and New Zealand's Acting Chief of Navy, CDRE Andrew Brown. “We know each other. We are partnering nations, that's the first thing," said CDRE Brown.

    : Repeat drugs offender, Jitendra Singh was sentenced to four and a half years imprisonment for possession of 141.13 grams of methamphetamine and $32,050 pa'anga seized in Ngele’ia. This was in addition to 21 months prison term he was already serving for a previous drug offending.

    : Tonga's local telephone and internet service providers, Tonga Telecommunications Corporation (TCC) and Digicel are using satellite links to restore their services to the two outer islands groups, with hopes that the domestic submarine fibre optic cable might be fixed in the next few weeks. The cable ship CS Lodbrog is expected to arrive in Tongan waters on Wednesday.

    : Stray dogs are being rounded up in Nuku'alofa this week, ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting here at the end of August. Assisted by Tonga Police and volunteers, a team of vets from Animal Fiji has commenced a “Trap Neuter & Return” program around the designated hotel accommodation and conference areas. The neutering is expected to make the dogs less aggressive and less likely to roam and fight.
