Tonga's teen medalist at Oceania Athletics Champs Darwin

Tonga's young teen athletes are stepping up at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, producing strong performances in field events against some of the region's best this week.

The championships held from May 18-23 at Arafura Stadium in Australia’s Northern Territory, bring together athletes from across Oceania as part of qualification pathways for major international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and World Athletics Championships.

Sixteen-year-old Christina Tukuafu delivered Tonga’s standout result so far, winning silver in the women’s under-18 discus with a throw of 45.96 metres.

Tukuafu finished second among 10 competitors behind New Zealand’s Sina-Maria Su’a, who claimed gold with 49.32m.

The young Tongan thrower also showed consistency across events, placing fourth in the women’s under-18 shot put with a distance of 14.27m to finish among the top five in both competitions.

Eighteen-year-old Penisimani Taeiloa also impressed in the senior ranks, placing fourth in the men’s senior discus with a throw of 45.93m against a field of 12 athletes.

Taeiloa backed up his discus performance by finishing inside the top 10 in the men’s senior shot put, recording 14.98m.

Seventeen-year-old Viliami Tuli added to Tonga’s promising results, finishing among the top five in the men’s under-18 shot put competition.

Team Tonga continues competition throughout the week as the championships run through Friday in Darwin.
