    : The Pacific Islands Forum’s new Secretary General, Baron Waqa (Nauru), arrived in Tonga Thursday afternoon, ahead of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, which opens in Nuku’alofa on Monday 26 August. He said the time has come for climate action at this meeting, that brings together leaders from 18 members across the Pacific Ocean. Tonight, with the Prime Minister, he met Pacific Islands' news journalists at the newly built accommodation centre at Popua.

    : Isiah Takau (39) from Ma’ufanga was sentenced to serve a total of three years and nine months imprisonment for possession of 11.94 grams of methamphetamine and cultivation of 10 cannabis plants committed in two separate occasions. He also committed the second offence while on bail.

    : Tevita Kauvaka Loto’aniu (28) was jailed for nine months for possession of illicit drugs, including 1.42 grams of methamphetamine seized at a residence in Houmakelikao in January earlier this year.

    : Manley Manu Soakai Palu (25) was sentenced to three years imprisonment, with a portion suspended, for three counts of causing bodily injury to a couple and their two year old daughter, while driving under the influence of alcohol. “The public must be protected from people who drink and drive,” stated the Judge.

    : On a first visit to Tonga and the Pacific, US Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn from Washington DC, was welcomed by the Peace Corps Tonga staff with a traditional Kava ceremony on Tuesday, at the Peace Corps Office in Nuku'alofa. During her visit this week, Director Spahn will administer the oath of services to 19 new Peace Corps volunteers on Friday.

    : Raids by Tonga Police Drugs Squad over the past week have resulted in the arrest of 17 people on Tongatapu, allegedly involved with importation, intended sale, and distribution of methamphetamine. In several raids on August 9, 13-14, and 17, police seized a total of 6.1 kg kilograms of methamphetamine allegedly imported into Tonga from the United States. A customs officer, a prison officer, a prisoner, two Comanchero gang members and a local businessman, are among the suspects charged, Police reported today.

    : A cluster of container houses assembled at Popua was officially launched on Saturday, 17 August, when HRH Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala unveiled a plaque revealing the name "Niu Lodge". The units will help to accommodate delegates attending the 53rd Pacific Island Forum Leaders' Meeting, which opens in Nuku'alofa on 26 August.

    : The Cable Ship Lodbrog successfully retrieved the southern end of the damaged domestic submarine cable on Wednesday. Tonga Cable Ltd. told Matangi Tonga today that work is underway to reconnect the cable today, to restore fibre optic communications to the northern groups of Vava'u and Ha'apai.
