Teen chess talent Mohe Lomu named best local player

Thirteen-year-old Mohe Lomu was named the Tonga’s best local player, at the first of its kind national chess tournament in Nuku’alofa on 25 June.

The Tonga Side School student finished among the leading players in the competition. at the tournament, held at the Tonga High School Library,

Lomu remained unbeaten against all her local opponents throughout the event, with her toughest challenge coming against international chess arbiter Tony Dowden, who eventually secured victory after a closely contested match.

Tony Dowden claimed six points and was named first place of the tournament.

Dowden praised the young player’s ability and composure, saying she had the potential to achieve greater success with continued development.

“She impressed me. I only won because she made only a few mistakes and she has the potential to do great things,” he said.

Tonga High School Principal, Ana Veikoso, commended Lomu’s sportsmanship and determination, saying additional training could help the teenager reach higher levels in the sport.

Tonga Chess Federation President, Bill Sanft, thanked players and their families for supporting the competition and helping establish the game in the kingdom.

Lomu finished equal second alongside three other competitors, including internationally rated players Martin Carter and Bill Sanft.

Tournament organisers said the event has identified players for the Tongan team to compete at the chess Olympiad scheduled for September this year.
