New dengue fever cases confirmed

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

A total of 32 cases of dengue fever have been confirmed across Tonga - an increase of 4 cases since the last report, the Ministry of Health reported today (Sit rep#5) 23 April 2026. Seven cases are currently hospitalised including five in Ha'apai and two in Tongatapu.

The majority of the cases are increasing in Tongatapu and Ha’apai, "among age group 11-14 years old, predominantly male in Tongatapu" MOH stated. 

Of seven cases currently hospitalized, five cases are admitted at Princess Fusipala Hospital, Ha’apai, and two cases admitted at Vaiola Hospital, Tonga.

The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the spread of the disease and urges the Public to follow the proper health safety guideline already stated by the MOH.

Response activities to reduce the spread of the disease in the community include, ongoing vector control measures, household inspections and larva source reduction to all households of the Positive Dengue Cases.

A health promotion and awareness campaign is being delivered through fono to the villages of Fo’ui, Havelu and Fangaloto and a clean up campaign will start tomorrow, Friday, at Fo’ui and Fangaloto.

There are outbreak responses for Ha’apai ongoing by the local health team there.

There have been no dengue fever-related deaths in this outbreak.
