    : Fiji recorded 873 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths over a 24-hour period ending at 8:00am on July 12. The country’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services said with daily increases in cases, they were seeing increasing cases of severe COVID-19 and increasing deaths.

    : To date over 7625 people in Tonga have received their second dose of the COVID-19 Astra-Zeneca vaccine, since the second vaccination roll out started on June 24 in Nuku'alofa. Meanwhile, the Ministry aims to inoculate up to 70 percent of Tonga's population by December this year.

    : Filimone To’aho (40) was sentenced to one-year jail for the theft of over $17,767 pa’anga, which he borrowed and misused to purchase 20 vehicles from Japan. By May this year, he repaid most of the money and received a suspended sentence.

    : New York Times reporting: California’s Death Valley reached 130 degrees Farenheit (54.44 Celcius) and matched a previous record set less than a year ago, in August 2020 — it might be the highest temperature ever recorded on earth, barring a disputed 134-degree reading from 1913. The scorching temperatures from the West’s third heat wave of the summer, compounding already dry conditions from a drought deepened by climate change, fuelled quick-spreading wildfires and fears of power outages over the weekend. The sweltering conditions reached into places that rarely see triple digits.

    : Tonga is experiencing a sugar famine that’s likely to last another month. Containers of sugar expected to arrive this weekend have missed shipping connections and will not reach Tonga until the end of August, according to one importer, who is still waiting for his January order to arrive. Deliveries that used to take 6-8 weeks are now taking 5-6 months to arrive in Tonga.

Its operators hope that the government will support continuing shipping services to the two Niuas and also to smaller outer islands.

    : The jailed Minister of Infrastructure and Tourism ‘Akosita Lavulavu (36) and her husband ’Etuate (62) were this morning denied bail pending their appeal. The Lord Chief Justice was not satisfied with their prospects of success on their appeals and gave reasons why in his 18-pages ruling, at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court.

    : Kautai Moala (38) was sentenced to five and a half-years imprisonment for possession of 19.49 grams of methamphetamine seized at Ngele'ia. The judge said he was appalled to learn that Moala was identified in the community as a supplier of drugs and used young boys from the community to run drugs for him.
