Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga’s Public Service Association (PSA) is demanding an additional 20% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) in their salaries and wages, the Minister of Finance, Hon. 'Aisake Eke told the Tongan Parliament on April 6. Whether or not government could meet the demand would not be clear until the government’s 2014-15 budget was finalized.4 comments

Sydney, Australia : The University of Sydney will be hosting a five day Pacific Studies conference from 22-26 April, 2014 that will look at action and adaption to climate change, and Australia’s role in the Pacific, among other topics. Senior Curator of Sydney University’s Macleay Museum and Conference Co-Convenor Jude Philp said the conference is an important way to draw attention to the need in Australia for more knowledge about the Pacific region. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The trial of five accused policemen charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of New Zealand Police officer Kali Fungavaka began today, Tuesday, April 8 at the Supreme Court in Nuku’alofa. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Ministry of Infrastructure has stopped the Tonga Red Cross from constructing temporary shelters for families in Ha‘apai after Tropical Cyclone Ian devastated the islands in January. Two houses completed on the island of Mou'unga'one were handed over to affected families this week but the Red Cross had planned to build another 24 to alleviate the suffering. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A major earthquake that struck off the coast of northern Chile this afternoon has generated a significant tsunami for Chile, with tsunami warnings issued for the Pacific coasts of South America, including Easter Island. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has now determined that no tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas although some may experience small sea level changes. For all areas covered by this center the tsunami warning and watch are now cancelled (6:00pm Tonga time). Premium content
