How is it that the Government and its National Security Agencies allow the situation to get to a point where our capital continues to be engulfed with flames? For now, this event is unimaginable to go this far, and we can only read and listen to news overseas with immense disappointment for leaders who were involved, especially in inciting the riot in the first place, and also at all political parties involved for failing to put an end or at least prevent such acts from happening. - Molisi Manu'atu

The outrageous, shameful destruction in the island of Tongatapu reflects the spiritual dryness, lack of moral attitude, and disrespectful character of the Democrat Leaders. I am not surprised at what had happened because most Leaders of Tonga are mere church attenders and not Christian Doers. People needs Representatives who loves the Lord. -M. Vaikalafi

How sad it is to hear what is happening in Tonga. I was shocked to hear that the peaceful little island I grew up in and always held in high views has diminished its friendly reputation because of these ignorant rioters. Is this what they call democracy? What happened to the values that we grew up with? - M. Niukapu

I'm not entirely moved by the hysteria over the MPs payrise and backpay issue. So far I...’ve seen little in the way of the numbers ie the pay level that the MPs were in and the pay level they...’ve voted for themselves now, to justify the public flogging on these pages. More importantly, I...’m keen to find out how their new rates compare with the rest of the public service including the sectors who were critical of the size of the pay hike but couldn...’t refuse it when offered. - Sefita Hao‘uli

I am not so sure I will be an early convert to the Chinese philosophy Mr. Moehau is enjoying. He may be enjoying the Chinese roses but forgot to recognize the deadly thorns. The fact that China has a growing economy should not blind us and join the bandwagon. China is still a communist country. It has a one party rule policy. China does not tolerate dissension or opposing views to its national policy. - Tama Foa

However, if you read my comments carefully, I do not hate America. "I love America with all my good heart." I am doing business and come to Amercia every other month, and so as China. (I am responding to you now from China). I love Tonga, and I love China too! Siosaia Moehau

This afternoon, Sunday 12/1½006, I took my family to a rugby match between Tonga and England. This was a big game the Federation Shield final. The game was played at Halton Stadium, Cheshire which is my local rugby stadium. I was so excited and proud the Tonga Rugby team is here in my own backyard playing one of the best rugby league teams in the world. - Senolita Swan

Of course, modern Tongans no longer hold that misconception (that palangis are selfish with their money), 200 years later. But I'm getting an ugly gut-feeling that Mr. Joe Smith still thinks that most Tongans "“are lazy and leach off one another".” -Sione A. Mokofisi

Tension is mounting in the Tongan Parliament this week over the direction of the Political Reform that has been set in motion since the end of 2004. The drama is also a decoy by the politicians to distract public attention from the massive salary increase - backdated for two years - the Members have just taken for themselves.

I got of the "Taulau Bus" only to find myself walking alone. So, Sione Mokofisi and the others, as much as you may not want to, the Tau Lau Bus will be kept in service because it is the most comfortable mode that excites our writers. In this Bus, you are not going to be responsible for anything and you are not required to do any work but throw trash into the fire to encourage the tau lau. - Sione Lousiale Kava
