    : In the Pacific, non-communicable diseases account for around 70% of all deaths, in Fiji that number is 80%, and the tragedy is that most of these deaths are preventable, Dr Tim Martyn of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation in Fiji told delegates from Small Island States, meeting in Suva. Delegates looked at a Global Action Plan to respond to the food and nutrition challenges. People are eating food they can afford and that "is what is making them sick,” he said.

    : A 21-year-old man from Pahu who is charged in relation to the brutal attack on a 58-year-old woman last week at Pahu, has been further detained in custody to appear at the Fasi Magistrate’s Court on Friday, December 2. The Tongan national has been charged with assault with a weapon, housebreaking and theft. More charges may follow.

    : An Eco-tourism project, Vai ko Felefonu (Felefonu Pool) in Vaini was officially launched by the Acting Prime Minister, Lord Ma’afu and his son Hon. Tevita 'Unga last Friday, 18 November, after the area received a $70,000 make-over. The project has provided a landscaped space that can be used for the selling of handicrafts by women and youth interested in tourism activities.

    : A fire gutted a Chinese shop on Vaha’akolo Road at Tofoa on Saturday night, 19 November. The Fire Service said the fire started from a back room where a stove and gas bottle was located and engulfed the building. There were no suspicious circumstances found.

    : Tonga's reputation as the Friendly Islands is being threatened by criminal thugs –thought to be from the same group, who are attacking Tonga's Chinese shopkeepers with a brutality that is breathtaking. Shop surveillance videos released to Matangi Tonga this week show extremely violent crimes. The videos record attacks – in one a gun is fired to the side of a woman shopkeeper – and another where a Pahu shopkeeper, hit by a suckerpunch to the face, falls backward suffering severe head injuries. He remains paralysed and fed on a tube.

    : Elizabeth Kite, Tonga’s first youth representative at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP) held in Canada last week, says the experience has been one of the most inspiring events in her life to date. She was inspired to see so many female politicians and how people regarded that as "normal". She now aims to pursue a career in Tongan politics.
