    : Forty-five foreign governments, including Tonga's primary aid donors, delivered their reviews and recommendations to the Government of Tonga at the United Nation’s 29th Session of Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, Switzerland this week. Most countries called on Tonga to ratify conventions and to “take steps to raise social awareness in understanding these instruments.", with some countries also urging Tonga to abolish the death penalty and to establish a Human Rights Institution.

    : Tonga’s new government was formally formed on Friday, 5 January “when Cabinet Ministers were appointed by His Majesty,” Tonga’s Acting Attorney General ‘Aminiasi Kefu confirmed today, 17 January, but admitted that he did not have a list of the names of Tonga’s new Cabinet Ministers.

    : Tonga’s human rights record will be examined by the UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group for the third time tonight, Monday, 15 January 2018, in Geneva. The UN in the Pacific is encouraging Tonga to continue constitutional reform and amendments "to widen the country's democratic space and respect for human rights."

    : Tonga’s newly elected government remains an unofficially confirmed list of names, despite the fact that the 2018 session was officially opened on 11 January with an "in-house session". The swearing of new Members of Parliament and selected Cabinet Ministers is now scheduled to take place on Thursday, 18 January.

    : Australia’s Development Minister Concetta Fierravanti-Wells – who visited Tonga in 2016 to sign the ‘Tonga-Australia Aid Partnership’ – is facing a formal complaint by China’s Foreign Ministry. The complaint responds to scathing remarks that Fierravanti-Wells made yesterday in a prominent Australian newspaper ‘The Australian’ where she berated China’s development aid projects in Pacific Island countries.

    : Tonga's Prime Minister, Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva did not attend the opening of the Tongan Parliament 2018 session, this morning, 11 January and no mention of his absence was made, in what was called a "Huufi Fakalotofale 'o e Fale Alea 'o Tonga" or "in-house" session. The MPs will take their oath of office on a later day to be announced.
