Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Viliami Kioa (43) of Sopu caused serious bodily harm to a woman who was cleaning a neighbour's property, when he assaulted her with a 4ft long aluminium pipe during a verbal altercation, which was witnessed by the victim's young daughter and another woman.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga's first Anti-Corruption Commissioner, a New Zealander, Mr. Chris LaHatte, was sworn into office before the Tonga Cabinet on Friday 5 July 2024. The first Executive Director of the office, Tongan lawyer, Mele Fakatouato Mangisi, was appointed in June to lead the office, which commenced operations this week on Monday 1 July. It has taken 17 years for the office to be established, since the passing of the Tongan legislation in September 2007. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A law graduate, Racheal Angelica 'o Manakakapu Guttenbeil (26), sponsored by AGT & Maa’imoa Catering, was crowned "Miss Heilala 2024" tonight, 5 July, at the Heilala village, in Nuku’alofa. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The National Reserve Bank of Tonga has been prohibited from publicly disseminating their directions, contained in a letter sent to the Tonga Development Bank on 17 May and 20 May, which was allegedly leaked in a radio broadcast. The Supreme Court of Tonga, Civil Jurisdiction, has granted the Tonga Development Bank (the Plaintiff/Applicant) leave for a judicial review. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Steam is continuously emitted from the vent of Home Reef volcano, indicating that volcanic activities are still ongoing at the reef, which has grown in size by up to 8 acres between June 15-30 as a result of lava flows, Tonga Geological Services reported today. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An application by the Tonga Development Bank for an “ex parte” injunction, seeking return of the materials seized in a police search of its premises in May, was refused by a Supreme Court judge. The applicants claimed that the seizure went beyond the scope of the warrant and included documents “belonging to Project Polata'ane”. A judge ruled that if this is to be pursued it must be made ‘inter partes’ meaning both parties present, since the urgency of the matter claimed was not demonstrated. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Before dawn today, the King's matapules, who had travelled from near and far, gathered at Pangai Lahi, next to the Royal Palace in Nuku'alofa, to prepare for a spectacular traditional Taumafa Kava (Royal Kava Ceremony), and not even the rain would dampen their spirits. Starting at 7:00am, the two-hours long Royal Kava ceremony not only celebrated the King's 65th birthday but was also the 'Pongipongi Hingoa', a traditional confirmation of the new holder of the hereditary title, Lord Ma’afu.
