Two new additional annual scholarships for Tonga’s high-achieving students, announced by Australia’s High Commissioner, H.E. Brek Batley, during celebrations marking 55 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and the Kingdom of Tonga in Nuku'alofa
One Academic Achievement Scholarship will be awarded to the highest-ranked female student in the Form 7 national examinations.
This scholarship offers the opportunity for the student to pursue an undergraduate degree at an Australian institution of their choice. It is fully funded, covering tuition fees, travel costs, insurance, academic support, and living allowances—valued at approximately AUD 300,000 (TOP450,000).
Australia will also offer an annual Academic Achievement Scholarship to the highest-ranked student in the USP Foundation Course examinations, supporting them to continue their pathway to a USP qualification at a regional campus of their choice.
“The Australia Awards program is a prestigious initiative that provides Tongans with access to world-class education in Australia and the region, equipping them with skills, leadership, and knowledge to drive positive change at home,” said Mr Batley.
“More than 600 Tongans have studied under the Australia Awards. They have challenged their minds, contributed to the future of this great Kingdom, and inspired the next generation of Tongans to aim high and chase their dreams through hard work. We are so thrilled that these new scholarships will continue to grow the Australia Awards community in Tonga and strengthen their contribution to Tonga’s development.”
These new scholarships are in addition to the 30 international scholarships offered annually to Tongans under the Australia Awards program. They also complement the Tupou College–Australia Academic Achievement Scholarship, introduced last year for the Dux of the international stream, following the New South Wales Higher School Certificate.
Australia will introduce two additional annual scholarships for Tonga’s top-performing Form 7 students starting next year.
