An 18 month long project to support the development of the vanilla industry in Vava'u this year has also helped Tonga's MAFF and Australian development partners to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by vanilla growers and the vanilla industry. Over 100 vanilla growers were directly assisted and 328 plantations monitored under the project, which has identified a need for new plantings, particularly on small family plantations.

Tonga's Minister for Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei received a dividend cheque of $4,345,262 pa'anga, presented by the Chairman of the Common Utilities Board of Directors, Carl Sanft on November 29. The Combined Utility Dividend for the year 2016 goes to the Government of Tonga, being the sole shareholder of power, water and waste utilities and the subsidiary companies Tonga Gas Ltd. and Home Gas Ltd.

Bank of South Pacific Tonga Ltd. last week opened new sub branches at Ha'apai and ‘Eua with fully Automated Teller Machine (ATMs) installed. BSP Country Head, Daniel Henson said renovations at the Vava'u branch were also opened by the Governor of Vava'u, Lord Fulivai, attended by the Chairman of Bank South Pacific, Sir Kostas Constantinou OBE.

The Ha'apai solar farm project - an on-grid project which will become the first utility scale solar energy generation facility in Ha’apai - was visited yesterday by Australian Minister, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and her delegation who were welcomed by Tonga Power Ltd. staff and the Governor of Ha'apai, Mo’ale Finau. Australia has contributed AUD$5.7 million towards Tonga's Outer Islands Renewable Energy Project in co-financing with the Asian Development Bank and the European Union.

The New Zealand Government is investing to improve aviation safety in eight Pacific Countries, including Tonga. Land users around airports are urged to attend consultations to be carried out before a national project commences in October 2016 focusing on Fua'amotu Airport (Tongatapu), Lupepau'u Airport (Vava'u), Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Airport (Ha'apai) and Kuini Mata'aho Airport (Niuatoputapu). Satellite technology will be used to develop new flight approaches, which will improve the ability of aircraft to land safely.

A $10 million pa'anga project to build the largest solar energy plant in Tongatapu, follows the signing of a long term Power Purchase Agreement between Tonga Power Ltd. and a Chinese power producer on September 12, 2016, for the construction and commissioning of a 2 Megawatt solar facility at at Mata-ki-‘Eua, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2017.

Digicel has launched faster internet connectivity to Ha'apai and Vava'u, which is five times faster than the current speed and it will also match data experience currently in Tongatapu. The internet speed will increase from 1Mbps to 5Mbps with 200Mbps capacity.

The Tonga Government has today reaffirmed its confidence in the investment agreement made recently with the Ngati Tahu Ngati Whaoa Trust from New Zealand. The government stated that a recent judgment made by the New Zealand High Court against the current Chairman of the Trust "was a private matter which does not...affect the Agreement that exists between the Trust and the Tongan Government."

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga has recommenced the pay out of claims by depositors and creditors of the former Pacific International Commercial Bank. In a statement on August 11, the NRBT said that payments may be collected from the NRBT. The license of the PICB was revoked by the Reserve Bank on July 26.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga wishes to assure the public that despite the revocation of the banking licence of Pacific International Commercial Bank (PICB) effective from 26 July 2016, the banking system remains sound. While PICB represented a very small proportion of the total banking system, the banks in Tonga continue to be profitable and maintain strong liquidity and capital position.

Tonga Communications Corporation handed over a dividend cheque of $1.213 million pa'anga to the Government of Tonga as shareholder in the full and final dividend payment for the last financial year 2014-15. This is the second consecutive year that TCC is paying a dividend in excess of $1 million pa'anga, and growing rapidly year on year over the last five years.

The public is advised by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga to take heed of the requirements for the removal of cash from Tonga, and for cash entering Tonga, in order to avoid any unnecessary delays in arrangements for travel or export of cash. Reserve Bank Permission is required for removal of cash exceeding T$10,000 or its equivalent in any other currency and all applicants must submit their applications to the Reserve Bank at least three days prior to the departure date from Tonga.

The Reserve Bank has revised its Exchange Control Policy Guidelines with effect from 1st May 2015. The Exchange Control Policy Guidelines outlines the supporting documentary evidence that must be sighted by the commercial banks, authorized foreign exchange dealers and the Reserve Bank prior to allowing any overseas payments to be made.
