A total dividend and tax of $3.5 million pa'anga for the Financial Year 2017/18 was paid to the government shareholder by the Shared Transport Sector Public Enterprises this week. Chairman Dr Sione Ngongo Kioa reported that Ports Authority Tonga (PAT), Tonga Airports Ltd. (TAL) and Friendly Islands Shipping Agency (FISA) continued to maintain their combined net profit before tax above the $8 million mark. The dividend is 25% of net profits and the remaining 75% of net profits after taxes will support the Transport Sector's critical projects.

The University of the South Pacific-Tonga campus welcomed HM King Tupou VI for the commissioning of their new Kukū Kaunaka Collection of academic theses by Tongan scholars, in a closed event on November 14. In a statement, USP said: “It was indeed a most humbling and significant event as Tonga USP staff marked the 50th anniversary of the USP service in the region and in Tonga.”

Bank South Pacific (BSP) Tonga has donated $30,000 to Tonga Red Cross relief program to support the victims affected by Cyclone Gita. Sione Taumoefolau, Secretary Generale for Tonga Red Cross Society said “this will go a long way in assisting their work in hiring trucks to deliver aid to affected areas, feeding the volunteers and other needed support.”

The Chairman of the combined utility board, Mr Carl Sanft presented a cheque of $7,319,219 to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei as the utilities combined dividend and tax for the 2016/2017 financial year. This is a record dividend and tax and the highest to be paid to the shareholder, the Government of Tonga by a Public Enterprise.

Six electrical Line Mechanics from Tongatapu and the outer islands will go to New Zealand for skills development, under an arrangement between Tonga Power Ltd. and Northpower Ltd. Since 2003, Northpower have recruited 34 line mechanics from Tonga.

Cargo throughput increased by 15% in 2016 compared to the previous year and this trend is expected to continue during major construction projects in the country, the Ports Authority Tonga stated in its 2016 Annual Report released today. Container throughput hit a record high and ships calls increased by 19% during the same period. Net Profit After Tax was $2.2 million, an increase of 16% from the 2014/15 result, allowing shareholders increased dividends. The first ever shipment of Tongan squash to China left Tonga this week, after Tongatapu exporter Nishi Trading successfully passed a strict quarantine inspection on Saturday, 26 November 2016. This important achievement took 18 months of negotiation and inspections leading to an initial protocol between the Governments of China and Tonga in May. This initiative was supported by PHAMA - the Pacific Horticultural & Agricultural Market Access Program.

Growth in cargo volumes and the number of ships calling at the Port of Nuku’alofa, as well as operating efficiencies has resulted in a record dividend of $$1,617,862 for the financial year 2015/16 for the Ports Authority of Tonga. The dividend was declared by the Board of Directors on 1 December 2016, during their Annual General Meeting in Nuku'alofa, when the Chairman Mr Stephen Edwards, presented a dividend cheque to the Minister for Public Enterprises, Poasi Mataele Tei, for the shareholder, the Government of Tonga.

An 18 month long project to support the development of the vanilla industry in Vava'u this year has also helped Tonga's MAFF and Australian development partners to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by vanilla growers and the vanilla industry. Over 100 vanilla growers were directly assisted and 328 plantations monitored under the project, which has identified a need for new plantings, particularly on small family plantations.

Poasi Tei received a dividend cheque of $4,345,262 pa'anga, presented by the Chairman of the Common Utilities Board of Directors, Carl Sanft on November 29. The Combined Utility Dividend for the year 2016 goes to the Government of Tonga, being the sole shareholder of power, water and waste utilities and the subsidiary companies Tonga Gas Ltd. and Home Gas Ltd.

The Ha'apai solar farm project - an on-grid project which will become the first utility scale solar energy generation facility in Ha’apai - was visited yesterday by Australian Minister, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and her delegation who were welcomed by Tonga Power Ltd. staff and the Governor of Ha'apai, Mo’ale Finau. Australia has contributed AUD$5.7 million towards Tonga's Outer Islands Renewable Energy Project in co-financing with the Asian Development Bank and the European Union.
