Mr. ‘Alo-ki- hakau Maileseni was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Ports Authority Tonga on 1 August 2022, for a term of four years. The Chairman of the Transport Sector Board of Directors, Dr. Sione Ngongo Kioa and Board of Directors approved the appointment, which was endorsed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Mataele Tei.

This year sees the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne and her Platinum Jubilee. We believe this is the first time this has happened in a Commonwealth country in recent history, and it is a very significant historical moment. But it is much more than that – it is a moment to celebrate Her Majesty’s lifetime of service and devotion to her realms and to the Commonwealth, to celebrate ‘both the institution of the Crown and the exceptional individual who wears it’, as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said so well. In the UK this weekend there will be a four day celebration. It will begin on Thursday 2 June. Nine scholarships were awarded to young students with a passion for science, on May 4, by Tonga Offshore Mining Limited (TOML), a subsidiary of The Metals Company, under its 2022 Scholarship Program in Tonga. Winners were presented with their certificates of merit by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Lord Tu'i'afitu and Ms Pele Pome'e.

After the challenges we have experienced to connectivity as a result of COVID-19, I am delighted the physical links between Australia and Tonga are building back. The newly formed WanTok Pacific Corporation (WPC) is launching a dynamic mobile, broadband, and money transfer service for the people of Tonga and Vanuatu. The new company launched its new brand identity and new broadband plans for consumers and businesses in both countries on September 3, 2021. WanTok Tonga is based at the PTH Building in Nuku'alofa.

Viliami Takau of Ma’ufanga, is the new General Manager of the Tonga Tourism Authority. The new Board of Directors announced that he assumed the position on 25 June 2021.

The Ports Authority Tonga held its 2020 Annual General Meeting on 22 February, and paid its sole shareholder, the Government of Tonga, a dividend of $1,541,445, for the financial year ended 30 June 2020.
