Pacific Aeronautical Charting Project
The New Zealand Government is investing to improve aviation safety in eight Pacific Countries including Tonga. This is a national project arranged between the Governments of New Zealand and Tonga to improve and promote a safe transportation of passenger, cargo/mail and crew in Tonga.
The project is planned to commence in October 2016 focusing on Fua'amotu Airport (Tongatapu), Lupepau'u Airport (Vava'u), Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Airport (Ha'apai) and Kuini Mata'aho Airport (Niuatoputapu) It will allow for more accurate surveying of runways at the same time checking the landscape for obstacles that could encroach on the flight paths of aircraft. Satellite technology will be used to develop new flight approaches, which will improve the ability of aircraft to land safely, especially in bad weather.
Consultations for land users
Tonga's Ministry of Infrastructure – Civil Aviation Division advised today that it is of vital importance that all land users around the areas of the airports become involved the consultation sessions. The consultations will discuss the activities that are expected to be conducted on their lands in order to meet the objectives of the project, at the same time providing a safer environment for the air transportation operation in Tonga.
"It is therefore with utmost importance that all should attend the consultation sessions that are planned to be carried out before the commencement of the project.
"A letter will be delivered to you again stating the project objectives and work activities that are planned to be conducted in October 2016 for your reference and information. We hope that we will continue to work closely and coordinate during the duration of this project," the Ministry advised.
People who have further queries about the project or need clarifications are requested to contact the office of the Director of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Tourism, Vaololoa, (Telephone: 23100 Extensions 203, 228 or 115.
