New York, USA : Modern Tonga was born, as Pacific historians claimed, out of a marriage of convenience between monarchy and Christianity, may I propose that postmodern Tonga should be conceived out of a marriage of necessity between philosophical, cultural, and political motifs and paradoxes which constitute Tonga's political reality. We need to reflect deeply on how to merge the present political reality and the democratic ideals, traditions and post-modernism, culture and politics, monarchy and democracy. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The eruption of the tiny volcanic island of Hunga Ha'apai, 62 km away from the capital Nuku'alofa, could be seen glowing on the horizon last night and has become a tourist attraction today with charter boats and flights taking people on short excursions to the area. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A private jet arrived at Fua'amotu International Airport this week for a 12 hour stopover bringing a group of 75 Americans who dropped into Tonga for breakfast, to see a special performance of Tonga's extraordinary Lakalaka. The group who were on a Smithsonian Journey and Starquest Expedition's Extraordinary Cultures Tour, arrived in Tonga at mid-night on Wednesday, March 18, and left at mid-day Thursday, March 19. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Residents of Nuku'alofa woke up to the spectacular sight of a sprouting white cloud of volcanic smoke or steam, which could be seen clearly on the northern horizon from the Nuku'alofa waterfront this morning. Geologists who estimate the underwater eruption is 34 nautical miles away from the capital will try to get closer to the event tomorrow. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Following the posting of my Editorial, "Fresh new parliament needs fresh new members" on February 23, there has been some aggressive flak from a People's Representative and reactions from political observers that attempt to distract from the points that were made. I have consistently pointed out that if Tonga sets up a new parliament with such a composition of 26 members...it is clear to see we will put a dictator in power. The great challenge before Tonga now is to put a democratic government into place as soon as possible and to avoid allowing vested interests to create a dictatorship. Editor's Comment.1 comment -
