Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A tsunami generated by a big Magnitude 8.1 earthquake off the coast of Mexico this evening is being projected toward the Pacific Islands. "The main beam is toward our area," said 'Ofa Fa'anunu tonight, after the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) activated a Tsunami Marine Warning, with a wave expected to reach Tonga at around 6:15am tomorrow morning (Saturday). Tonga is being "just cautious," said 'Ofa. "We are expecting less than one metre. It may be over one foot in Tonga but the tsunami warming centre is giving 1M for Samoa, Fiji and New Zealand." -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Sacked Minister of Finance Hon. Tevita Lavemaau said yesterday that it was his vote in Parliament that made Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva the Prime Minister. Without being specific, he alluded to a conviction that Cabinet decisions should not be made by one man or a minority in Cabinet.

Auckland, New Zealand : A 26-year-old man in New Zealand, Gustav Sanft (of Tongan heritage), has been found guilty of manslaughter by a New Zealand jury in relation to the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Amokura Daniels-Sanft, in 2016. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Lord Ma‘afu, named as Tonga's new Deputy Prime Minister this morning, has been Tonga's Acting Prime Minister since 1 September. The Prime Minister's Office today announced the backdating of new ministerial appointments.
