    : A dengue outbreak has been declared in Tonga. One girl (12) has died, with 19 confirmed cases across Tongatapu. The girl from New Zealand who died on 24 January at Vaiola Hospital was visiting family over the Christmas holidays when she caught dengue.

    : Talakai Aholelei (66) – the driver of the bus which crashed in New Zealand in 2016 killing three Tongan nationals – was sentenced to 5½ months’ home detention by a New Zealand court on Wednesday. Talakai was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay $36,000 in emotional reparations. The bus was carrying 53 people, mostly members of a brass band from Mailefihi Siu'ilikutapu College in Vava’u – who were touring New Zealand to raise funds.

    : Three years after Tonga’s Ministry of Education reformed Tonga’s examination marking system, and replaced its Standardized Marks System with a "National Raw Marks - Outcome Based System" there is still confusion and reaction against the new system in Tonga. Parents are complaining to their Members of Parliament that school certificates issued in Tonga are not recognised by higher education institutions overseas.

    : Twenty-six Tongan students have been awarded tertiary scholarships to study in New Zealand and Fiji starting this year, funded by the New Zealand Government through its Aid programme. New Zealand universities have accepted 21 scholars, while Fiji’s University of the South Pacific has accepted six.

    : An exhausting week-long walkathon around Ha’apai, ‘Eua, Vava’u and Tongatapu was completed last week by Frazer Mataitonga from the ‘Akanesi Mataitonga Trust. Frazer agreed to perform the challenge as part of a fundraiser to help the ‘Ofa Tui ‘Amanaki Centre, which supports handicapped children.
