    : The Government of India has announced that it will provide USD$1 million owards Tonga’s recovery from Cyclone Gita. India’s Prime Minister H.E Mr. Narendra Modi sent a message to Tonga’s PM ‘Akilisi Pohiva on 16 February, announcing India’s contribution and conveyed his "deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers for the victims of this natural calamity."

    : A fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) have been transported to Tonga with the support of the Australian government, to provide a comprehensive visual assessment of the damage caused by Cyclone Gita, the World Bank reports today. Tonga has also received a payout of more than US$3.5 million from the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company – the first payout made by the insurance platform established in 2016.

    : Chief Justice Paulsen of the Tonga Land Court scolded the Minister of Lands Hon. Ma’afu in a ruling of a land dispute case on 5 February. The ruling dismissed a decision by the Minister of Lands to regrant land registration to an overseas based Tongan man. The man wanted to evict his niece who had been living on a town allotment in Fanga for more than 40 years.

    : Around 14,000 Tongan students will be able to return to school soon with new emergency education supplies provided by UNICEF in partnership with the NZ Defence Force, after Cyclone Gita damaged around 129 classrooms in 83 primary and secondary schools in southern Tonga last week.

    : A falling tree branch on Taufa'ahau Road hit Senior Police Constable ‘Apisai Fihaki (36), knocking him unconscious and fracturing his right ribs, while he was responding to a call for emergency evacuation during Tropical Cyclone Gita.     : Bank South Pacific (BSP) Tonga has donated $30,000 to Tonga Red Cross relief program to support the victims affected by Cyclone Gita. Sione Taumoefolau, Secretary Generale for Tonga Red Cross Society said “this will go a long way in assisting their work in hiring trucks to deliver aid to affected areas, feeding the volunteers and other needed support.”

    : Cyclone Gita destroyed 18 homes and damaged another 60 houses in Houma, on Tongatapu, where a massive clean-up operation is underway this week. Lord Vaea of Houma said some tarpaulins had been distributed on Saturday, but "We need the tents!"
