Tonga is struggling to take full control of the harvesting and the exporting of its Bech-de-mer (sea cucumber) resources to reap its fair share of foreign currency earnings from its export. The CEO for the Ministry of Fisheries, Dr Tu‘ikolongahau Halafihi said public consultations on harvesting and exporting had been ongoing since a moratorium was imposed in 2015 but the consultations were not finished before the moratorium was lifted. Eight fishing boats donated to Tonga from Dongguan Municipality in China in January this year, were returned when officials discovered, after inspecting the vessels, they were of a low quality and none were up to standard. However, China has provided funds to build the new fishing boats here in Tonga.
