Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The top seats in Tonga's Legislative Assembly and government, were secured by the King's Nobles today. The Prime Minister Designate, as well as the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, are all landed nobility, chosen during today's special meeting of the elected members of the House. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Lord Fakafanua (40), who entered parliament in 2009 as a Noble’s Representative, has served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga since 2017. Today's ballot in the House was secret, but the numbers suggest that the Noble PM Designate attracted the support of at least seven of the People's Representatives. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Lord Fakafanua has been declared as the new Prime Minister of Tonga after taking 16 votes (out of 26 cast by elected members) in the Tonga Legislative Assembly today. He defeated one other nominee the caretaker Prime Minister Hon. Dr 'Alsake Eke, who has served one year as PM. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The last minute postponement of a national child protection policy launch this week is frustrating a women's rights advocate and Director of Women and Children's Crisis Center (WCCC) ‘Ofa Guttenbeil-Likiliki, who fears the policy endorsed by Cabinet in October, may now be rescinded, after new submissions were presented to Cabinet today.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Two written nominations of candidates for Prime Minister Designate were received before the deadline at 4:30pm today, the Chief Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga confirmed this evening. The names will be disclosed on Monday when elected representatives meet to choose the next Prime Minister.

Manila, Philippines : A USD$80 million grant to finance transformational infrastructure upgrades on Tongatapu including the construction of the Fanga'uta Lagoon Bridge, has been approved by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through its Tonga SECURE Proiect, which will be the largest development partner-financed project undertaken in Tonga’s history, with the Government of Tonga providing $25 million in counterpart financing.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A Tongan-designed King’s Baton for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games was revealed in Nuku'alofa this week, ready for Tonga to take its turn in the worldwide relay, which leads up the Games opening in July. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A former senior customs officer, Mosese Katoa (58), is serving two years in prison on charges that included the importation of prohibited goods. When firearms concealed in a crate arrived in Tonga in 2023 he also attempted to bribe another Customs Officer to avoid the scanner.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Repeat offender, Funaki ‘Otuhouma (32) is serving two years in prison on serious housebreaking, theft of goods valued at around $15,806 and serious wilful damage. He also breached a suspended sentence which was added to his sentence.
