Canberra, Australia : A new DNA study by scientists at the Australian National University has indicated that the first people to live in Tonga and Vanuatu originated directly from Taiwan and the Northern Philippines. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An Indonesian diplomat said that Indonesia is “shocked” at six Pacific Islands governments, including Tonga, for accusing Indonesia of human rights violations in West Papua. Nara Masista Rakhmatia during a speech at the 1st Session of the General Assembly of the UN in New York on 24 September 2016 also accused PM Pohiva and other Pacific leaders of using the General Assembly to advance their domestic agendas and to divert attention from political and social problems at home. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Tongan Parliament resumed its 2016 session yesterday morning October 3, amid disarray. Apparent procedural inefficiencies wasted much of the day. Firstly, a letter protesting against a Bill for a Water Resources Act was read even before the Bill was read in the House. Then legislators spent over an hour listening to motions from one member, even though the Legisture had already voted on and decided for the motions to be lowered into the Whole House Committee.
