Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Eight young men were found guilty on charges relating to a brawl in central Nuku’alofa between two opposing groups from Ha‘ateiho and Paho last year. The charges included jointly causing grievous bodily harm to a victim from Pahu, who suffered life-endangering injuries. Seven of the accused punched and kicked the victim’s head, while another repeatedly hit the victim’s head with a sii branch, causing brain injury. The victim, died shortly afterwards.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga is the first Pacific Island country to conduct household surveys to collect data on the lives of women and children, under a new round of statistical surveys being undertaken in the region. Expected to be completed in December 2024, the household survey will cover a wide range of indicators, including health, education, and child protection, providing a holistic view of the nation’s progress since the last survey in 2019. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A total of 118 earthquakes were detected within the Tonga region in September. Due to upgraded earthquake detectors, Tonga Geological Services is recording an average number of 100 earthquakes monthly - twice as many as before they had the equipment. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The master of an inter-island ferry, the MV Ko e Kelesi Pe, Tevita ‘Ilangana, received a suspended sentence for proceeding to sea improperly when he permitted the vessel to sail with 141 passengers (in excess of the permitted 90 passengers) from Ha’apai to Tongatapu in 2023. The judge said that overloading his ship in this way put the passengers at risk and life could have been lost. “This is a serious matter.” Premium content -

Wellington, New Zealand : A research led by the University of Otago, Wellington has found that Tongan-led solutions are needed to overcome barriers to bowel cancer screening, for Tongans living in New Zealand. The bowel screening age was lowered to start at 50 years old for Pacific peoples, which lead researcher Dr. Viliami Puloka, from the University’s Department of Public Health, said is an essential step in increasing the accessibility of the programme. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Severe flooding in Nuku’alofa inundated roads this morning after overnight storms, with gale force winds and exceptional rainfall, toppled trees and brought down power lines on Tongatapu. Forecasters warned that a second line of squally weather would pass over southern Tonga tonight, bringing more rainfall. In less than 24 hours today, Saturday, 'Eua and Fua'amotu recorded more than twice their average monthly rainfall for the whole month of October. -
