The retail prices for all petroleum products for Tongatapu will remain the same while petrol prices drop for September. LPG prices for Tongatapu and Vava'u also drop, the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development (MTED) advised.
MTED stated that the September price change for petroleum is based on the July 2025 average of the published daily Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS) benchmark prices for product prices and freight, along with that month’s exchange rate. The average Brent crude oil price for July was US$69.55/bbl which was nearly identical to June.
"Petrol Prices started and ended the month around US$80/bbl, decreasing slightly from around 20 July due to lower refining margins, but this decline recovered before month end. Diesel Prices trended up during July due to increased exports to Europe; these exports were facilitated by low European stocks and favourable freight prices. Kerosene Prices trended up during July due to increased exports to the United States; these exports were facilitated by favourable freight prices," MTED noted.
Prices in late June surged due to fears of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, these prices fell quickly moving into July, due to the late June ceasefire and continued to trend down during the month allowing cheaper transit of petroleum products around the world.
The Tongan pa’anga weakened against the US dollar, thus increasing prices slightly. Considering the combined effects of the above movements, and the updated pricing template approved in the 2025 Annual Petroleum Price Review, is an increase in wholesale prices for diesel (inclusive of Consumption Tax) and a decrease in petrol prices, along with a small reduction in kerosene prices as follows:
- Petrol: down by 6.78 seniti per litre
- Kerosene: down by 1.07 seniti per litre
- Diesel: up by 2.96 seniti per litre.
However, due to rounding up and down, the retail prices for all petroleum products for Tongatapu will remain the same whereas Petrol prices drop by 10 seniti/litre.
LPG
MTED stated that the decrease in Saudi CP butane prices has driven a decrease in Tongan LPG prices, and the slightly strengthened $US/TOP exchange rate during the period under review May – July, decreased the price further.
"Since mid-July 2023, LPG price rounding adjustments has been monitored, ensuring changes occur once the balance reaches 5 seniti/kg."
As a result, Tongatapu and Vava'u will see an overall decrease of TOP 0.15 /kg and TOP 0.20/kg respectively in the quarterly LPG prices.
All prices include consumption tax.
The new petroleum and LPG prices were approved by the Tonga Competent Authority (TCA).
