    : A new tropical cyclone outlook model will generate much earlier predictions for the number of tropical cyclones than current models used in Pacific Island countries, says the University of Newcastle in Australia. According to its current predictions, Tonga should expect one or two cyclones for the upcoming cyclone season (December – April).

    : Many ethicists conclude that fully informed volunteers should be allowed to sign up for a potentially dangerous trial that will reduce the time required to bring an effective vaccine to everyone who could be exposed to SARS-CoV-2. The alternative is that the virus will continue to impose much higher levels of risk on other people, especially health care workers, older people, and people with underlying health conditions that reduce their chances of surviving infection. We should praise the young and healthy volunteers for risking their safety in order to save others. By Peter Singer and Isaac Martinez

    : A Pacific Unite: Saving Lives Together, is the first televised and digitally streamed concert by the United Nations to call on leaders and citizens across the region to work together with the rest of the world in the fight against COVID-19. Tonga's massed Tupou College Choir and Mia Kami will perform. It premiers on August 15 on Television Tonga and other broadcasters around the region.

    : The 150 passengers repatriated from New Zealand on Tuesday have all tested negative for CoViD-19 confirmed MEIDECC CEO, Paula Ma’u today. Currently, over 2800 people are registered on the government’s repatriation list wanting to return to Tonga, The next repatriation flight is booked tentatively for 25 August.

    : Halavavae Sosaia Tameifuna was convicted at the Supreme Court for dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm to a 36-year-man on Vaha'akolo Road, by intentionally swerving his car to hit the victim, who did not see the car coming. The judge found it was premeditated causing of serious injury.

    : Tonga’s second repatriation flight arrived this afternoon with 150 passengers coming from New Zealand. One very happy family was waiting beside the road at Fua'amotu village near the airport, to welcome home one of the passengers, a 70-year-old father and grandfather, whom they hoped could see them as the quarantine buses left the airport.
