Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Three urgent Government Bills, including a Constitutional amendment, were passed by the Legislative Assembly of Tonga this week, in Nuku’alofa. The Constitutional amendment introduces the word “customs”. People’s Representatives Vaipulu and Sovaleni expressed concerns about the future limitations of using “customary law” and potential confusion in court. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : No damage has been reported from a tsunami wave that passed through Tongan waters last night. A tsunami warning was cancelled at midnight after the wave was recorded at 30cm in the Niuas and 5-10 cms for the rest of Tonga. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : An arsonist, Taniela Matangi (38) will serve seven years imprisonment, for serious housebreaking and stealing tapa and mats from a church minister's home in Longolongo. Washington D.C., U.S.A : A former US mormon missionary, who served in Tonga, was arrested yesterday, 24 July, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on charges related to the exploitation of minors who had been entrusted to his care. A U.S. Department of Justice investigation so far has identified 14 minor victims throughout Tonga in offending that began in 2017. William James Purdy of West Valley, Utah, was arrested by Tonga Police in October 2022 but fled the kingdom before his scheduled trial.Premium content

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : In its first-ever ruling on climate, the International Court of Justice (the “World Court”) makes it clear that States have an obligation to protect the environment from greenhouse gas emissions and act with due diligence and cooperation to fulfill this obligation. The legal initiative taken by Vanuatu to the ICJ was inspired by its youth.
