Communities affected by volcanic ash from last year’s eruption of Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha’apai volcano will benefit from improved access to safe and hygienic drinking water as a result of a USD $50,000 (TOP 116,000) grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation to the Tonga Community Development Trust. “It is critical for our communities to ensure the water they are drinking from tanks is clean and safe,” says TCDT Executive Director, Sione Fakaosi.

Bank of South Pacific Tonga Limited (BSP) today, Friday 10 March, 2023, announced a Net Profit after Tax of T$13.4 million pa'anga for the financial year ending 31 December, 2022. The Bank South Pacific Tonga Limited made a net profit after income tax of $9.881 million pa'anga for the year ending 31 December 2020, the Directors declared in a key disclosure statement summary today. This compared to a profit of $11.155 million in 2019. Net Operating Income declined during the year 2020 under COVID-19 restrictions.

The Chairman of the combined utility board, Mr Carl Sanft presented a cheque of $7,319,219 to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei as the utilities combined dividend and tax for the 2016/2017 financial year. This is a record dividend and tax and the highest to be paid to the shareholder, the Government of Tonga by a Public Enterprise.

Cargo throughput increased by 15% in 2016 compared to the previous year and this trend is expected to continue during major construction projects in the country, the Ports Authority Tonga stated in its 2016 Annual Report released today. Container throughput hit a record high and ships calls increased by 19% during the same period. The New Zealand Government is investing to improve aviation safety in eight Pacific Countries, including Tonga. Land users around airports are urged to attend consultations to be carried out before a national project commences in October 2016 focusing on Fua'amotu Airport (Tongatapu), Lupepau'u Airport (Vava'u), Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Airport (Ha'apai) and Kuini Mata'aho Airport (Niuatoputapu). Satellite technology will be used to develop new flight approaches, which will improve the ability of aircraft to land safely.

A $10 million pa'anga project to build the largest solar energy plant in Tongatapu, follows the signing of a long term Power Purchase Agreement between Tonga Power Ltd. and a Chinese power producer on September 12, 2016, for the construction and commissioning of a 2 Megawatt solar facility at at Mata-ki-‘Eua, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2017.
