The Bank South Pacific Tonga Limited made a net profit after income tax of $9.881 million pa'anga for the year ending 31 December 2020, the Directors declared in a key disclosure statement summary today. This compared to a profit of $11.155 million in 2019. Net Operating Income declined during the year 2020 under COVID-19 restrictions.

Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC) will be providing special relief mobile packages and bonus data, along with other initiatives to ensure all TCC customers are supported during the unprecedented CoViD-19 National Lock Down, the company announced on March 27. TCC CEO Timote Katoanga urged everyone to follow Tongan Government guidelines on Lock Down Level Four to limit and prevent the spread of CoViD-19 across Tonga.

In a deal that will strengthen shipping services network throughout the South Pacific, the Neptune Pacific Line (Neptune) announces it has acquired Pacific Direct Line (PDL) from PDL’s parent holding company, Pacific International Lines (PIL). The combined business will seamlessly link transport, warehousing, depots and customs clearance services and fully integrate customers’ supply chains across 18 South Pacific markets.

Paying to the shareholder a combined total tax of $1.9 million during the financial year 2018/19 – the Transport Sector Public Enterprises reports a return to the shareholder and the people of Tonga, a total dividend and tax of $5.5 million for their performance during the financial year 2018/19, an increase of 57% from the financial year 2017/18. The Transport Sector Public Enterprises consists of the Ports Authority Tonga, Tonga Airports Limited, and the Friendly Island Shipping Agency.

Bank South Pacific (BSP) Tonga has donated $30,000 to Tonga Red Cross relief program to support the victims affected by Cyclone Gita. Sione Taumoefolau, Secretary Generale for Tonga Red Cross Society said “this will go a long way in assisting their work in hiring trucks to deliver aid to affected areas, feeding the volunteers and other needed support.”

The Chairman of the combined utility board, Mr Carl Sanft presented a cheque of $7,319,219 to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Hon. Poasi Tei as the utilities combined dividend and tax for the 2016/2017 financial year. This is a record dividend and tax and the highest to be paid to the shareholder, the Government of Tonga by a Public Enterprise.

Six electrical Line Mechanics from Tongatapu and the outer islands will go to New Zealand for skills development, under an arrangement between Tonga Power Ltd. and Northpower Ltd. Since 2003, Northpower have recruited 34 line mechanics from Tonga.

Cargo throughput increased by 15% in 2016 compared to the previous year and this trend is expected to continue during major construction projects in the country, the Ports Authority Tonga stated in its 2016 Annual Report released today. Container throughput hit a record high and ships calls increased by 19% during the same period. Net Profit After Tax was $2.2 million, an increase of 16% from the 2014/15 result, allowing shareholders increased dividends. The New Zealand Government is investing to improve aviation safety in eight Pacific Countries, including Tonga. Land users around airports are urged to attend consultations to be carried out before a national project commences in October 2016 focusing on Fua'amotu Airport (Tongatapu), Lupepau'u Airport (Vava'u), Salote Mafile’o Pilolevu Airport (Ha'apai) and Kuini Mata'aho Airport (Niuatoputapu). Satellite technology will be used to develop new flight approaches, which will improve the ability of aircraft to land safely.

A $10 million pa'anga project to build the largest solar energy plant in Tongatapu, follows the signing of a long term Power Purchase Agreement between Tonga Power Ltd. and a Chinese power producer on September 12, 2016, for the construction and commissioning of a 2 Megawatt solar facility at at Mata-ki-‘Eua, which is expected to be fully operational by mid-2017.

Digicel has launched faster internet connectivity to Ha'apai and Vava'u, which is five times faster than the current speed and it will also match data experience currently in Tongatapu. The internet speed will increase from 1Mbps to 5Mbps with 200Mbps capacity.

The Tonga Government has today reaffirmed its confidence in the investment agreement made recently with the Ngati Tahu Ngati Whaoa Trust from New Zealand. The government stated that a recent judgment made by the New Zealand High Court against the current Chairman of the Trust "was a private matter which does not...affect the Agreement that exists between the Trust and the Tongan Government."

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga has recommenced the pay out of claims by depositors and creditors of the former Pacific International Commercial Bank. In a statement on August 11, the NRBT said that payments may be collected from the NRBT. The license of the PICB was revoked by the Reserve Bank on July 26.

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga wishes to assure the public that despite the revocation of the banking licence of Pacific International Commercial Bank (PICB) effective from 26 July 2016, the banking system remains sound. While PICB represented a very small proportion of the total banking system, the banks in Tonga continue to be profitable and maintain strong liquidity and capital position.

The public is advised by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga to take heed of the requirements for the removal of cash from Tonga, and for cash entering Tonga, in order to avoid any unnecessary delays in arrangements for travel or export of cash. Reserve Bank Permission is required for removal of cash exceeding T$10,000 or its equivalent in any other currency and all applicants must submit their applications to the Reserve Bank at least three days prior to the departure date from Tonga.
