    : Tonga's Home Reef Volcano erupted again early this morning, with eruption events increasing over the last 24 hours, sending steam vents 1km into the atmosphere. A volcanic submarine island has re-emerged 10m above sea level and continues to grow larger, Tonga Geological Services said. The volcanic activity poses low risks to aviation, but all mariners are warned to keep away from the area.

    : Children at Nakelo Montessori Kindergarten learned about policing in a special day with Tonga Police officers, on 14 September at Tu’atakilangi. Sergeant Tu’uholoaki, a Trainer at the Police College, urged parents not to teach children to fear the police, “Teach their children the truth: a police officer’s job is to help them in time of trouble or when they need help, and to keep them safe."

    : Heneli Losalu (25), ‘Akapei Fa (20) and Semisi Moeaki (20) have been jailed for serious bodily harm, committed when they jointly attacked and injured a 17-year-old in the village of Puke in January this year. "It is a tragedy of this case that these young men are getting prison sentences today. But this court cannot allow this level of violence, with rolling attacks spilling over into peoples' kava clubs or private residence, especially when in the name of the inter college rivalry. That is simply demented and wrong," said the judge.

    : Solar power for around 197 households on the small island of ‘Uiha in the Ha’apai Group, was tested this week marking an important transition from diesel to solar power generation, ahead of commissioning at the end of the month. The island's two villages, which had only six hours of electricity a day, now enjoy 24 hours a day of 100% renewable power.

    : Nesiasi Kamoto (49) was found guilty of discharging a a .22 rifle to intimidate his relatives, who were living at his tax allotment in Tofoa. He will be sentenced at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court. on 28 October. “This should be a salient reminder to owners and licensed holders how important it is to ensure safe and secure storage of firearms," said the judge.

    : Mele Teusiva ‘Amanaki was awarded $50,000 in damages by the Supreme Court, after winning a long and winding defamation lawsuit against Tonga Weekly newspaper and its former editor Faka'osi Maama, who published articles and a photograph on three occasions back in 2014. The Lord Chief Justice had no hesitation in finding that both defendants were actuated by malice.
