    : The size of oxygen-starved ocean “dead zones,” where plants and animals struggle to survive, has increased fourfold around the world, according to a new scientific analysis. “Oxygen is fundamental to life in the oceans,” said Denise Breitburg, lead author and marine ecologist with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. “The decline in ocean oxygen ranks among the most serious effects of human activities on the Earth’s environment.”

    : An "authoritative and dominating" father of five, Sunia Mailau (45), was convicted of committing incest, rape, assault and indecent acts against his teenage daughter. He was sentenced following trial, to over 9 years’ imprisonment by Judge C.B. Cato of the Tonga Supreme Court on 17 December.

No statement on his condition has been issued by the Prime Minister's Office, but medical authorities report that his condition is stable this evening. A medical evacuation to Auckland planned for today was cancelled.

    : The Tongan community in Utah are mourning the loss of 46-year-old Kolei Soseti Maile of St George, Utah, USA who passed away on Christmas day after an illness. He leaves behind a wife, four children and a football team – the Pine View High School football team – for whom he worked for as an offensive line coach.

    : The new year welcomed seven beautiful new babies in Tonga, with six born at Vaiola Hospital on Tongatapu and one at Prince Ngu Hospital, Vava’u. The first, arriving bright and early, was Herschel Tiuke Duane Miller Jr Pola. Only two of the new babies were girls. They are among the first of an estimated 385,793 babies born on New Year's Day around the world.
