    : A couple in their early 50s were found dead with stab wounds to their heads and necks on Sunday afternoon, February 25, at a bush allotment in Lakepa, Tongatapu. Tonga police are looking for the couple’s missing vehicle a silver Toyota Sparky 2000, registration plate L16768.

    : An escaped convict, ‘Amoni Fifita (34), was sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the Tonga Supreme Court for the armed robbery of a store in Kolovai last year 2017. The getaway driver and father of 16 children, Pakileata Fukofuka (48), was sentenced to 3½ years jail with 18 months suspended.

    : The Tonga Men’s Nines Rugby League team lost to Australia 14 – 8 in the final of the Rugby League 2018 Commonwealth Championship. The final became an 8-a-side match after a brawl in the opening minutes of the game led to two players from each team being sent-off. The Tonga women’s rugby league team failed to win a medal despite topping their pool.

    : The Tonga Supreme Court has acquitted a teenager on charges of knowingly having consensual intercourse with a 14-year girl in 2017. The court accepted that the accused, who was 18 years old at the time, believed that the girl was 17 years and would not have had sexual intercourse with the girl if he knew she was 14. The girl became pregnant as a consequence.

The National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) under the directorship of Leveni ‘Aho with the assistance of civil societies, civil servants and volunteers, is coping with the initial recovery stage from Gita.

    : A fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) have been transported to Tonga with the support of the Australian government, to provide a comprehensive visual assessment of the damage caused by Cyclone Gita, the World Bank reports today. Tonga has also received a payout of more than US$3.5 million from the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company – the first payout made by the insurance platform established in 2016.

    : Chief Justice Paulsen of the Tonga Land Court scolded the Minister of Lands Hon. Ma’afu in a ruling of a land dispute case on 5 February. The ruling dismissed a decision by the Minister of Lands to regrant land registration to an overseas based Tongan man. The man wanted to evict his niece who had been living on a town allotment in Fanga for more than 40 years.
