Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Cargo throughput increased by 15% in 2016 compared to the previous year and this trend is expected to continue during major construction projects in the country, the Ports Authority Tonga stated in its 2016 Annual Report released today. Container throughput hit a record high and ships calls increased by 19% during the same period. Net Profit After Tax was $2.2 million, an increase of 16% from the 2014/15 result, allowing shareholders increased dividends. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a preliminary statement this week that Tonga’s “economic activity is expanding and likely to remain relatively strong into the next couple of years”. However, the IMF found that there was a lack of recent statistical information available such as government finance, inflation, balance of payments, and national accounts data for their assessment of economic development. -
