Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Supreme Court of Tonga has ruled in favour of a civil claim brought by the Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs against the Public Service Commission, who unlawfully initiated serious disciplinary action against her. In his ruling the Lord Chief Justice Whitten KC. considered that there were many problems with the regulations - saying the wording in some regulations is "nonsensical". He also said the PSC was in breach of a requirement to appoint a CEO for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Chinese Navy Hospital Ship, the Peace Ark docked at Vuna Wharf to a welcoming fanfare this morning, 28 July. Hon. Hu'akavameiliku urged the Tongan public to use the free services [starting from Monday] on the ship. The PMO said that the Ministry of Health is in close collaboration with the ship in organizing Chinese medical teams designated to village health centres, while a helicopter team is assigned to dispatch immediate medical cases in the outer islands. A medical team will also be visiting Primary and Secondary Schools for educational exchanges. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A new hospital for Vava'u and a new nursing school at Vaiola Hospital in Tongatapu, are two big health initiatives, planned by government under its new budget, the Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku said today. He expects financial aid from foreign donor partners will help to cover the government's $31 million budget deficit for the financial year. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A 5.8 magnitude (Mw) earthquake was felt by the people of Niuatoputapu at 1:29pm today, 27 July. There was no tsunami threat or damage. Last month there were 155 seismic events over 4Mw in the Tonga region. -

The system will deliver clean, reliable, and efficient electricity supply to the people of Niuatoputapu, as well as 100 kilowatts of standby thermal power to ensure continued supply of energy during inclement weather. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : On a first visit to Tonga by a US cabinet member, today, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, took a few quiet minutes to lay a wreath at the seafront Cenotaph in Nuku'alofa, before he met with the Tongan Prime Minister and other officials at St George Government Building across the road. The War Memorial honours the Tongan fallen in two World Wars. In WWII there were more American troops stationed in Tongatapu than Tongans. During the morning, Secretary Blinken spoke about US perceptions of today's superpower rivalry in Tonga and the Pacific region, when he was answering questions at a media briefing. -
