    : The National Reserve Bank of Tonga wishes to assure the public that despite the revocation of the banking licence of Pacific International Commercial Bank (PICB) effective from 26 July 2016, the banking system remains sound. While PICB represented a very small proportion of the total banking system, the banks in Tonga continue to be profitable and maintain strong liquidity and capital position.

    : A complaint has been lodged with Tonga's Public Relations Commission against the new Minister for Tourism, Hon. Semisi Sika, accusing him of an "illegal takeover" of the Tonga Tourism Authority Board, according to Tomifa Paea, the TTA chairman who said he filed the complaint and that the dispute had led to a freezing of the TTA bank account. It is now expected that new board members for TTA will be announced tomorrow, Thursday, in an ongoing dispute between the Minister of Tourism and the TTA that was originally set up to operate as an independent body.

    : Auckland raised tenor Filipe Manu won second place at New Zealand’s prestigious opera singing competition, the 2016 Lexus Song Quest, last Saturday July 23. The 25 year-old came second to a fellow Aucklander, baritone Benson Wilson who won the competition and the $20,000 prize.

    : A woman is entitled to feel safe in her own home. Home invasion accompanied by sexual offending is not uncommon in Tonga possibly as a consequence of the limited security many homes have, a Supreme Court judge said when sentencing Paneti Sa (18) to five-years imprisonment for the predatory and callous crime when he raped a 27-year-old pregnant woman in her own home in Tongatapu, last year.

    : A teenager has died after remaining in a coma for over a week after suffering a violent attack in the Nuku'alofa Central Business District on the night of July 9. Ten male accused, some of them teenagers, were arrested over the weekend and charged with manslaughter in the death of ‘Alani Fuapau (19) whom they allegedly beat and stomped on in Taufa'ahau Road.
