Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The new Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mrs Polotu Paunga of Ma'ufanga was appointed today, 26 March, at the Public Service Commission in Nuku'alofa, where she signed a four years contract with the Government of Tonga.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Three floriculture nurseries sheltering thousands of flowering orchids and anthuriums, were officially opened by HM Queen Nanasipau'u this week at the MORDI base in Havelu, Tongatapu. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The unmanaged drugs issue in Tonga is becoming “a new normal”, says Tonga's Head Psychiatrist, Dr. Mapa Puloka, who is seeing illicit drug-related disorders making up 40% of monthly admissions to the psychiatric ward. With mental health impacts skyrocketing, there is no one available to pick up the pieces. From the frontline, both Mapa and the Salvation Army counselor Mele Prescott are lonely voices urging government to establish a drugs rehabilitation center in Tonga, as they see families and communities being broken by the mental health impacts of illicit drugs use. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : ‘Atenisi senior lecturer, Vasalua Jenner-Helu, has been accepted as a Visiting Academic in Linguistics at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom for three months at the end of the year, where she intends to research chauvinist attitudes towards Austronesian language among 19th century British linguists, supporting a forthcoming PhD thesis focusing on the compromise of the Tongan language by European missionaries. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A $1.12 million water tank project funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide a safe and climate resilient water supply for some schools in Tonga. Honiara, Solomon Islands : The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) today, 21 March, launched a major upgrade and development to their monitoring and surveillance efforts, with two new systems built for vessel registrations and Port State Measures. The e-PSM system is a critical tool in the fight against Ilegal Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) in the Western and Central Pacific. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The government-owned Lulutai Airlines Limited sold a new issue of shares to the Retirement Fund Board in August last year, a recent filing with the Tonga Business Registry reveals. Manuka ACT, Australia : The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme lures workers from Pacific Island Nations and Timor-Leste with promises of opportunity and money. Yet once workers arrive in Australia, they have to face the reality of poor working and living conditions. Tonga is home to one of the largest cohorts of Pacific Islanders who come to work in Australia on PALM visas - equivalent to 9% of the Tongan working age population. The bigger issue with this kind of temporary labour scheme is the impact they have on Pacific economies. The PALM Scheme is large, and it is growing – fast. By Alexia Adhikari
