No damage in Tonga from 10-30cm tsunami

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

No damage has been reported from a tsunami wave that passed through Tongan waters last night. A tsunami warning was cancelled at midnight after the wave was recorded at 30cm in the Niuas and 5-10 cms for the rest of Tonga.

This morning, the Acting Prime Minister, Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, reported to Parliament that no damages were reported across any of the islands.

He said the Niuas experienced a 30-centimeter wave, which was observed along the coast by local residents.

For the remaining islands, including Vava’u, Ha’apai, ‘Eua, and Tongatapu, waves ranged from 5 to 10 centimeters.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre issued a cancellation of the tsunami warning after the threat had passed.

Last night Tongans were warned to move away from seafront areas, after Tsunami alerts were issued in the Pacific Basin, following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake off Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
