Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A lack of recovery of the marine ecosystem around the area of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano, surprised an international team of scientists who have been researching the area for several weeks. “We expected to see more biological species in the water column, as well as on the sea floor but that was not the case,” said Chief Scientist Dr. Rebecca Carey on board the RV Investigator, back in Nuku'alofa this week. -

Berlin, Germany : A big test for the Paris agreement is taking place this week at the United Nations General Assembly, where all countries are to present their national climate plans, a process that ends in Belém, Brazil at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) later this year. Despite the depressing state of climate debates today, I am optimistic that the collective spirit built over the last decade is now quietly but deliberately working to consolidate and build upon the gains that have been made. The Paris agreement is one that all countries – whether fossil-fuel producers, island states, or the world’s wealthiest economies – negotiated and ratified in record time. It combines effective measurement and monitoring with flexibility for countries to determine and devise their own plans to confront climate change. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Penisoni Tu’ifua Angilau (37) is serving 10 years in prison for four charges that included supplying 534.53 grams of methamphetamine to his second cousin to pack the illicit drug at her residence in Lomaiviti, Tongatapu, in March last year. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Vili Lausi’i (46) is serving three months in prison for pointing a loaded .22 semi-automatic rifle at a couple who were driving in Lapaha, while he was assisting a community night patrol in December last year. He was sent to jail by the Lord Chief Justice, who was concerned with the increase of the negative use of arms in the society and to deter others from this behaviour.Premium content
