The registration of voters for the November General Election will close on Thursday, 18 September. Today, a significant number of young people were registering, the Supervisor of Elections, Pita Vuki told Matangi Tonga.

The Electoral Commission's provisional figures for voters released in February, shows that there are 62,000 voters overall in Tonga.

"Based on our figures released in February, individuals aged 21 to 35 makes up approximately 25% of the total voters," Vuki said.

The largest demographic is those aged 31 to 45, making up about 37% of registered voters.

Voting is not compulsory in Tonga.

"In Tonga, one must register to vote when they reach 21, however, it is not compulsory."

The Electoral Office will release the registration figures this Friday, 19 September.

Meanwhile, Vuki noted that his office will accommodate late registrations or supplementary votes until 6 November.

"This provision is for individuals who turn 21 after this Friday, or any person who has not yet registered to vote."

He believes the numbers of voters in this election will be higher than the 2021 general election.

The General Election for representatives of the Nobles and the People to the Legislative Assembly of Tonga will be held on 20 November.

Meanwhile, the nominations for candidates will held on 8-9 October.
