A new 15-year policy framework for Tonga education will be formulated under a joint Tonga-New Zealand project, launched this morning in Nuku'alofa. It aims to build an education sector that has more impact, and to put Tonga in a better position to attract development partner investment and support.

Tonga could receive the CoViD-19 vaccine “maybe at the end of the first quarter or beginning of the second quarter of the year,” the Ministry of Health Acting CEO, Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa, said today, 9 February. Home quarantine was no longer allowed, because 27 people had breached the rules, out of 1,624 repatriates.

Heamani Saafi (66) was sentenced to two-years and six-months imprisonment for cultivation of three cannabis plants at his home in Ha'asini. The illicit drug weighed 59.18 grams. Justice Langi suspended the sentence in full on February 4, at the Nuku’alofa Supreme Court.

The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre was activated at 6:00am this morning, for Tropical Depression 09F, forecast to bring damaging gales to Tongatapu and 'Eua late this afternoon and overnight. Schools are closed today in Southern Tonga and gale warnings are in force for all Tonga land areas and coastal waters.

Tonga has joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), becoming its 84th member at an official flag raising ceremony held at the AIIB headquarter in Beijing, China, on 5 February. The AIIB was established in 2016 with $100 billion capital.
