Lolina ‘Ofa (24) was sentenced to 15-months imprisonment for numerous counts of forgery and theft of $18,189 pa’anga from a family business. The sentence was fully suspended, at the Nuku'alofa Surpeme Court. "I believe the defendant had mistakenly believed that this idea of taking whatever you want from your fa'etangata would be applicable in her case, but unfortunately the complainant did not share her logic," said the judge.

Tropical Cyclone Ana has weakened and was downgraded into a Tropical Low Pressure System by Tonga Meteorological Services at 2:00pm today, Tuesday. The cyclone has buffeted Tongatapu with gales and stormy seas overnight and this morning.

Tropical Cyclone Ana has weakened into a Category 1 storm as it moves into southern Tongan waters today. The Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, at 5pm Monday, said a gale warning remains in force. On its current track, it could bring destructive storm force winds to Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau and damaging gale force winds over Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua, early Tuesday morning.

Tonga is finalizing its National Deployment and Vaccination Plans to access CoViD-19 vaccines from the COVAX Facility, and initial quantities are expected to be announced soon. A Ha'apai woman has died today after being rescued with 18 people, who were on board a small local ferry boat that capsized in heavy seas off Foa Island, on Wednesday afternoon. A rescuer said the woman had refused one of his four life jackets so it could be given to a child. There were no life jackets on the boat. Two people remain in hospital.

An important mangrove area at the mouth of Tongatapu’s Fanga'uta Lagoon that was destroyed in 2017 to make way for a golf course project in Popua, is slowly being restored by the Department of Environment. “It’s a huge job to restore this area,” said team leader, Hoifua Aholahi, who urges the public not to destroy the nurseries at the site.
