Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Three women and a young child were rescued from a sinking boat yesterday afternoon, in Ha'apai, over six hours after the boat from Kotu island got into difficulties at sea. The skipper of the sinking boat swam to the island of Lofanga and a rescue was mounted to save the passengers before nightfall.

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Eight young men were found guilty on charges relating to a brawl in central Nuku’alofa between two opposing groups from Ha‘ateiho and Paho last year. The charges included jointly causing grievous bodily harm to a victim from Pahu, who suffered life-endangering injuries. Seven of the accused punched and kicked the victim’s head, while another repeatedly hit the victim’s head with a sii branch, causing brain injury. The victim, died shortly afterwards. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga is the first Pacific Island country to conduct household surveys to collect data on the lives of women and children, under a new round of statistical surveys being undertaken in the region. Expected to be completed in December 2024, the household survey will cover a wide range of indicators, including health, education, and child protection, providing a holistic view of the nation’s progress since the last survey in 2019.
