Baku, Azerbaijan : The Board of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, established to aid developing countries that are vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, is meeting this week in an international effort to get the Fund operational and recognised as a financial institution within the world bank system, ahead of COP29 the World Climate Summit to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Queen Salote College made their debut in the annual Japanese Speech Competition for schools, and won two first prizes for the form 4 and 5 levels. Suva, Fiji : Wednesday, 18 September 2024, is a significant day in Oceania football when, for the first time in history, two teams will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2025, to be played in Morocco. The qualifiers will be the winners of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship semi-finals - first Samoa vs New Caledonia, second New Zealand vs Tonga. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS), an organization dedicated to helping thousands of vulnerable people in Tonga, now needs a little help itself, to escape increasing floodwaters around the termite-ridden buildings in Nuku'alofa that it has worked in for decades. TRCS Secretary General, Sione Taumoefolau, told Matangi Tonga that they are organizing a fundraising ball on 22 November, to start raising funds toward constructing a new service centre that will cost around $15-16 million. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) marks its 35th anniversary on Monday 16 September 2024 with an audited net profit of $35 million as its twin milestones. The $35.8 million profit in 2024 is 75 percent higher than last year’s 2023 record profit of $20 million. Following the NRBT Board approval of the KPMG Fiji external audited NRBT Annual Financial Statements for the financial year ended 30 June 2024, Lord Sevele ‘o Vailahi chairman of the Board at the NRBT 2024 Annual General Meeting today presented a cheque of $25.1 million to the Prime Minister, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku as its annual distribution of the Bank’s profits. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Pousima Vaioleti (29) was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment, with the last four months suspended, for the theft of a vehicle and other items valued at $50,580 from a 73-year-old man with hearing impairment in his home at Vaini.
