Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A new marine navigation chart survey of the waters of Ha‘apai and Nuku‘alofa, has discovered uncharted marine volcanoes that are big enough to sink a cruise ship. Tonga's marine charts, among the oldest still in use, are being updated using airborne laser, metric sonar and an unmanned submarine- enhancing Captain Cook's fathoms measurements made by ropes in the 18th century. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A thin layer of brown scum has appeared on the surface of the public swimming pool at the waterfront in Touliki this week, raising concerns on the water quality of the popular site. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The successful relocation of Tukuraki, a Fijian village in the highlands of Ba, Viti Levu, to a new site is a prime example of the future of climate resilience, a reality faced by communities vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters in the Pacific. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : A total dividend and tax of $3.5 million pa'anga for the Financial Year 2017/18 was paid to the government shareholder by the Shared Transport Sector Public Enterprises this week. Chairman Dr Sione Ngongo Kioa reported that Ports Authority Tonga (PAT), Tonga Airports Ltd. (TAL) and Friendly Islands Shipping Agency (FISA) continued to maintain their combined net profit before tax above the $8 million mark. The dividend is 25% of net profits and the remaining 75% of net profits after taxes will support the Transport Sector's critical projects. -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The National Reserve Bank of Tonga aims at securing Tonga’s Foreign Reserves at a level of about $457.3 million, equivalent to more than seven months of imports, with the enforcement of the Foreign Exchange Control Act 2018 on 1 November. The Act requires Tongan exporters to repatriate at least 60% of their export proceeds. And, if the economy fails and the foreign reserves drop below the threshold, - then the Act gives the government the right to try and force Tongans who have invested overseas to repatriate their funds to Tonga.
