    : Pacific Island countries aim to strengthen their regional seismic network and find ways to improve their multi-hazard early warning systems in the South-West Pacific region, where about 30% of global seismicity is observed and 15% of deadly tsunamis are generated. The challenges were addressed at the 7th Annual Meeting of the Oceania Regional Seismic Network was held for the first time in Nuku’alofa, on 17-19 October, followed by the 7th Session of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System Working Committee on 20-21 October.

    : Assessments have begun for the building of a dialysis centre in Nuku’alofa, with a ground breaking ceremony planned for the end of the year, the Prime Minister, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, said on 20 October, in Nuku'alofa. It will go hand in hand with education for Tongans on the importance of healthy diets, in an effort to combat the crippling effects of diabetes on the community.

    : ‘Okusitino Penisimani Tatafu (50) was sentenced this week to seven-years and eight-months imprisonment for possession of 249.74 grams of cocaine seized in Vava'u in 2021. A jury earlier found him guilty of carrying a significant amount of cocaine. The police drugs taskforce was waiting for the defendant in a hotel room where an informer said the buyer was staying.

    : A prolific offender, ‘Okusitino Langi (49), who is serving a lengthy prison term for drug offences, received additional time for similar offending in prison, totalling nine-years imprisonment, after being sentenced on 14 October. The Lord Chief Justice said the circumstances of this offending were troubling. “For the defendant to have been able to possess and sell drugs in prison suggests real operational deficiencies in security within the prison.”
