Results for Earthquakes

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake, located close to Vava'u and felt in Nuku’alofa at 11:12am this morning, Friday 19 January 2024, is posing no tsunami threat, Tonga Meteorological Service, advised.

A  6.7Mw earthquake woke-up sleeping residents of Tonga last night at 11:27pm local time, 2 July. It was felt strongly in Vava'u, and more lightly in Ha'apai and Tongatapu.

A total of 37 earthquakes occurred within Tonga in the month of September, but none of them were felt by communities, the Tonga Geological Services, reported in its Tonga Seismic Bulletin for September. (Yesterday's 6.7mi felt tremor will be covered in their October bulletin).

An earthquake centred close to Tongatapu and 'Eua was felt as mild shaking in the capital Nuku'alofa at 11:50am, today, Tuesday 25 August. Tonga Geological Services are now conducting an online survey to find out how the earthquake was observed in different parts of Tonga. Click for links.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake was felt on Tongatapu at 2:05 pm today. Tonga Meteorological Service reported that the earthquake was located 88km Southeast of Nuku'alofa at a depth of 83.9km. There is no tsunami threat to Tonga from this event.

Tonga is currently on a tsunami watch after a strong unverified earthquake has been felt in the vicinity of Tonga this morning Sunday 16 June. Tonga's National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) is activated. Meanwhile, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii forecast tsunami waves of less than 0.3 metres above tide level for Pacific Islands coasts including Tonga (forecasted) following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the Kermadec Islands Region. Tonga Met will broadcast updates on local radio.

There was no tsunami threat for Tonga following a powerful earthquake east of the Fiji islands this morning, the Tonga Meteorological Office advised. The earthquake has been rated by Global tectonic reports among the largest deep focus earthquakes ever observed and was one of ten earthquakes over M 4.3 in the region today.

The tsunami threat from a Fiji earthquake today has now passed, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Ceter in Hawaii, has advised. Fiji coastal areas were warned following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, at 11:53pm local Fiji time today. Tonga Met advised there was no threat for Tonga.

A cluster of three large earthquakes were reported between Niuatoputapu and Samoa this evening between 8:56pm and 9:48pm - measuring 6.8, 6.4 and 5.6 magnitude.
