Nuku'alofa, Tonga : The construction of Vava'u's first solar power plant to be built with a US$5 million grant from the Government of Abu Dhabi is on target for completion by October 2013. When the plant comes into operation it will provide 13 percent of the annual energy demands of Vava'u, while saving up to 180,000 litres of diesel fuel annually to reduce the cost of electricity.Premium content

Kanokupolu, Tonga : A 400 metre fishing net left abandoned in the Kanokupolu Lagoon last week was a recipe for disaster. What was, not so many years back, a sustaining pristine lagoon environment, live with corals and teeming with tropical marine life has been broken up, over-fished and depleted. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Thousands of old car bodies stockpiled in Nuku'alofa's Pili Quarry will be crushed and baled for export over the next month, thanks to an initiative by a Tongan businesswoman, 'Ofa Tu'ikolovatu and her husband, whose recycling company has hired a $4 million crushing and baling machine and shipped it to Tonga for the work.1 commentPremium content
