Suva, Fiji : A total of $24.2 million has to date been provided by the United States to support efforts to prevent and respond to the spread of COVID-19 in the Pacific Islands, through support for humanitarian partners, including Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and UN World Food Program (WFP). -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : As the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt, 93% of Pacific businesses reported that not knowing how long the crisis will last is their main challenge. In Tonga 47% of businesses surveyed said they were not very confident in business survival after CoViD-19. Another 33% said they were somewhat confident, but only 20% of businesses in Tonga were very confident that their business would survive the CoViD- 19 crisis.

Palmerston North, New Zealand : A study led by Massey University to look at the barriers to self-management of asthma in Pacific children has been awarded $971,541 by the Health Research Council of New Zealand. Pacific people are three times more likely to be hospitalised with asthma than Europeans or other New Zealanders, said Principal Investigator Dr Sunia Foliaki. Premium content -

Nuku'alofa, Tonga : Tonga is looking at more repatriation flights to bring nationals home from low risk countries, but the cost of quarantine for repatriated passengers over a three-month period is estimated to be around $1 million pa’anga, the Ministry of Health CEO Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola conjected today.
